Popular car shipping routes

The lanes people post most often. Don't see yours? Any pickup and delivery in the US or Canada works the same way.

How long does car shipping take?

Mostly it depends on distance. These are typical days on the truck after pickup; the pickup window comes first, and each company writes its own times in its quote.

Trip lengthTypical transit
Under 300 miles (480 km)1–2 days
300–700 miles (480–1,130 km)1–3 days
700–1,100 miles (1,130–1,770 km)2–4 days
1,100–1,500 miles (1,770–2,410 km)3–5 days
1,500–2,000 miles (2,410–3,220 km)4–7 days
2,000–2,500 miles (3,220–4,020 km)5–8 days
Over 2,500 miles (4,020 km)7–10 days

Cross-border trips can take a day longer. Alaska and Hawaii depend on sailing schedules.

Seasons that change the picture

Snowbird season

Southbound runs to Florida, Arizona, Texas and Southern California peak from October to December; the return trip peaks from March to May. Post early on those lanes.

Summer moves

June to August is the busiest moving season: school-year moves, new jobs and military transfers.

Winter weather

Snow, road salt and mountain-pass chain laws can add a day or two in the northern US and Canada from December to March.

Hurricane season

June 1 to November 30 on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Storms can delay pickups and deliveries near the coast.

Open or enclosed?

Most cars ship on open carriers. Enclosed trailers protect against weather, salt and road debris and are the usual pick for classic, exotic, lowered and brand-new cars. You can ask for both and compare.

Crossing the border

Only companies that handle cross-border work will quote a US–Canada trip. Expect to provide the ownership or title, ID and a signed authorization letter; permanent imports into Canada go through CBSA and the RIV program, and US exports need the title at US Customs (CBP) at least 72 hours before the car leaves.
